Highlight are ‘Loved’ in new MV
Highlight have released their special third mini-album ‘Outro’ and the title track ‘Loved’.
This release marks the group’s first comeback since the release last year of ‘Celebrate’, and the first comeback without leader Doojoon who is currently undertaking his military enlistment.
Regular readers of my articles will undoubtedly know of my feelings and attachment to Highlight, so you will have to excuse me if this review is a little biased!
‘Outro’ and ‘Loved’ are a farewell gift of sorts from the remaining members of Highlight as they prepare to enlist for their mandatory military service early next year. Yang Yoseob will enlist as a conscripted policeman on January 24, while Lee Gikwang, Son Dongwoon and Yong Junhyung are yet to confirm their enlistment details.
The title track ‘Loved’ is best described as a fusion of alternative rock and EDM pop. It has been written and composed by the Good Life team which is made up of Yong Junhyung and Kim Tae Joo.
One of the lines from the song reflects the mood and feelings of the song perfectly, it is; “I will wait for you here no matter how long it takes.”
The use of percussion on the track drives the track forward and provides a solid foundation from which to build from. The strings used for the refrain are a nice touch and is coupled with a loop that sounds very familiar – go listen to their 2016 hit ‘Ribbon’ and you will know what I’m talking about.
The vocal driven pre-chorus is a standout and ensures the song is as beautiful as you would expect from a veteran idol group, and they don’t disappoint, despite the lack of Doojoon’s soothing vocals.
The music video that accompanies the track perfectly fits with the mood and vibe of the song. It is generally muted and moody and sees the members reminiscing about the past. The mood is lifted by the choreography segments where the colour is lifted and the energy running through the clip is lifted as well.
