2Z are winning legions of fans with their music, their looks and their charms!

By  |

Since their debut in January 2020 with their first EP ‘We Tu Zi‘, 2Z have been hard at work making a name for themselves in the music world. Their (now) legions of fans collectively known as ‘From A‘ love the mix of genres that the band is so fond of.

Browsing through their YouTube channel will make choosing a favourite song nearly impossible – from their sublime cover versions to the array of original tracks – where do you start?

Now in 2022, ‘From A‘ includes members from not just Korea, but from every last corner of the globe. All Access Asia are not immune to their charms, we’re big fans of 2Z, and we’ve been following their career from the very beginning. Now, we’ve been lucky enough to be given the chance to have a chat with the members Jiseob, Hojin, Bumjun, Zunon, and JungHyun.

Check out what they had to say and what their plans are for 2022.

2Z “(Even if not) I’m OK”

How did each of you get started in music?

Jiseob shares that he started to play the guitar when he was just 10 years old. He continued, “I got quite deeply into playing guitar and always dreamed about becoming a member in a band.”

“It seemed like such a beautiful dream that I could deliver my feelings and messages through my music.”

Hojin tells us “I’ve been friends with Jiseob since middle school. He is the one responsible for introducing me to rock music for the first time. I got a shock when I first heard how powerful that music is.”

“When we got a little older, Jiseob had an audition for a band and he suggested that we should go together. We both passed the audition and joined 2Z. As I’ve got to know the producers and our CEO, I’ve got more and more comfortable with the music. I’ve become proud of myself as I’ve worked hard to express and convey the emotions of our songs to our audience. I’m a vocalist who works hard to deliver our vision to people, and I’ll continue to work hard.”

Bumjun was in the fashion industry before he got into music. He was participating in fashion shows at Seoul Fashion week, shooting commercials and working on shoots for fashion magazines. The CEO of his agency suggested he go to an audition for the band, and the rest, as they say is history.

Zunon told us, “My dream was to be an actor. Then I was invited to the audition. I realised that acting and music are both forms of art, so I decided that I wanted to try and express my feelings through music.”

JungHyun shared that when he was in high school, he was working as a model when the CEO of his agency recommended he go to the audition. He continued, “I like to try lots of different experiences. So, I tried hard at the audition and I was lucky enough to pass. When I played the bass guitar, it touched my heart and I made up my mind to become a member of 2Z.”

What are some of the biggest changes that you have faced in your daily lives since your debut?

Jiseob is in awe of the fact that they have a fandom. He said, “We have From A. Before we made our debut, I never thought about that. It makes me want to do my best. I haven’t met From A yet, but I hope to meet them one day.”

Hojin shared that for him the biggest change has been that he is always singing or humming a tune, and that he is always tapping out a beat. He said, “My vocal coach and producer, who spends a lot of time with me has a habit of singing all the time.”

“At first I thought it was just a habit, but then I learned to incorporate that into my practice so I didn’t forget that ‘sense’, so now I sing whenever I have free time. I’m not a drummer at all, but I’ve also got into the habit of tapping out a beat with my hands.”

“These habits make me think, I am making music!”

Bumjun said, “The members have been living together in a dormitory as a team since we first made our debut. As we have been living as a group for so long now, I have come to think of, and be considerate of the other members before myself in my daily life.”

Zumon had a similar thought, “Being a member of the team, we are used to doing everything together and so I have learnt what team work is all about, and I’ve become a little ‘chubbier’.”

JungHyun said that the ‘meals habit’ is one of the biggest changes that he has experienced. He commented, “When I was working as a model, I had to watch my weight. Since becoming a member of 2Z, I am eating well. I need to eat well in order to practice and concentrate on music. I am so happy now.”

What was the inspiration behind your EP OST ‘Plz Luv Me Again’?

We often use an app called ‘Pocketdols’ to communicate with our fans. Last summer ‘Pocketoon’ which is a webtoon content creator was launched and 2Z was approached to appear in our own webtoon. Finally, our webtoon ‘Please Love Me Again‘ was launched in November 2021. The webtoon was created based on the real life stories of 2Z members. We thought it would be fantastic to make an OST to go with the webtoon, and we ended up making a total of six (6) webtoon OSTs. We decided to name the album OST ‘Pls Luv Me Again‘ because our original music fit with the webtoon so well. The album OST is also the OST for our drama ‘2Z’s Future Music Life‘.

What was the concept behind the MV for ‘I Know’ and was it as much fun to make as it looks?

Jiseob shared, “The concept of the music video was to give energy to our fans, and to show who we really are. It has the vibe of a video call that everyone can enjoy. We all laughed so hard while we were checking the playback. I think it is a music video that shows how we really are and how much energy we have.

What’s your favourite part of the creative process – writing the music, recording the music or performing the music?

Jiseob shared, “It’s hard to choose one. But, I think I’d have to choose performance. For us playing music belongs to all five members. The energy we have when we’re playing together is so powerful. No one can take that from us. We look at each other when we’re playing and I have so much fun.”

Hojin said, “My favourite is when I perform. The song ‘I Know‘ was created about all the members having fun and running around together. So, I think performances where we can have fun together is the best.”

Bumjun told us, “Performance is my favourite. We all shine and are at our happiest when we perform.”

Zunon shared, “Writing is my favourite part of the process. When Jiseob let me hear ‘I Know’, I was so excited. I can still feel that excitement.”

JungHyun agreed with the other members. “Performance is my favourite part of the process. We did an online showcase and we had so much fun. I can’t wait for the next live performance.”

What type of content do you enjoy making for your VLOG? What can we look forward to seeing in the future?

JungHyun told us, “We’re going to be making some behind-the-scenes videos that show the story behind the final content. For example, the MV for ‘It Is U‘ has many behind the scenes cuts – the MV shooting site, the song recording site and the jacket shooting site. We want to share the process of how music videos are created. I think this type of content is what ‘From A‘ are curious about and want to see.”

What sort of artists do you aspire to be?

Jiseob shared, “As a group we hope that our music is healing and that it brings a sense of comfort to our fans. They also hope that 2Z’s music can bring emotion into people’s lives – whether that be tears, joy or healing.”

If you could pick any artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

Bumjun told us, “I would choose Sunmi. When we (2Z) rearranged and covered her song “Tail“, it came out really great. We were very excited to see that Sunmi left a comment on our cover in our social media, and I have good memories of Sunmi cheering for me on a music show. If there is a chance in the future, I would like to perform together.”

What would you like your fans around the world to know about you – individually and as a group?

“As a group we want our fans from around the world to empathise with our music. We were given the nickname of ‘Kids Singing About Hope‘. We as people, can’t live alone. We all live together. That’s why we share each other’s pain and try to heal others with our music. We know that there are people all around the world who have heard our music and it has had an impact on their life. Knowing that, we feel that it would be wonderful for more people to ’empathise’ with our music.

Jiseob laughingly shared, “Some From A know that Bumjun is considered the fashion king amongst 2Z members. Actually, 2Z‘s fashion king is me! I think it is more accurate to say that Bumjun is in second place.”

Hojin tells us, “I want our fans to know that I am the most fearless and ‘manly’ member of 2Z. I am also the coolest member who accepts my faults and can apologise quickly after fighting.”

Bumjun commented, “I have the nickname of being 2Z‘s fashion king. I hope that fans will take an interest in my fashion style through concerts, fan meetings and our social media.

Zunon told us, “I am a bit of an introvert and have a hard time approaching people. I would like fans to know that I would be very happy if they greet me first and cheer loudly for me when we meet,”

JungHyun shared, “I am a food lover. I am excited to travel around the world to perform, but I’m even more excited to try new foods. I will ask ‘From A‘ to make recommendations of what and where I should eat when I visit their town.”

What’s next for each of you and for 2Z as a group? What plans are already in place for 2022?

We can’t wait to meet our fans and lots of new people in 2022. We’ve all been through so much, and our goal continues to be to introduce our songs and our music to as many people as possible. Bumjun and Hojin are taking on the new challenge of acting. Other members are also going to be exploring that challenge this year. We are going to be working hard to meet ‘From A‘ in more diverse ways through 2022.

What are your plans for touring this year? Would you include Australia in your plans if/when the international borders open?

Hojin told us, “Our tour to Brazil is confirmed for June this year (2022). We are planning to hold fan meetings and concerts in four cities in Brazil. Tour schedules for the United States and Mexico are also being coordinated. We’d really like to do a concert in Japan before going to Brazil in June.”

He continued, “Australia is a country I really want to go to. We sincerely hope that through All Access Asia more fans will discover our music and 2Z will be able to go there to see you all soon. We’ve seen many live clips on YouTube where artists are performing in Melbourne. It’s exciting to watch those videos and we definitely want to perform there and all around Australia.”

Do you have a final message to share with your fans?

Jiseob said, “From A until we can meet in person, we will keep preparing and we will keep imagining how beautiful that day will be. When the time comes for us to meet, let’s greet each other happily. I love you From A“.

Hojin commented, “I have been so happy to have this interview and to meet new people from different countries through All Access Asia. I hope you will be more interested in us after this interview. Please watch our videos and listen to our music before you meet us. Don’t forget to subscribe and like our YouTube channel. I am really looking forward to meeting you all. Thank you.”

He continued, “P.S. From A we are really looking forward to meeting you.”

Bumjun shared, “Hopefully we will have many chances for a world tour, concerts and fan meetings to create lots of memories together. Let’s have a fun 2022.

Zunon said, “I can’t wait to perform for From A and our fans. I’m looking forward to meeting From A and creating many memories.”

JungHyun said, “First of all I want to thank our fandom From A who always spend time with us. We’re still in the midst of the pandemic, but we can get through it. Let’s do our best.”

He continued, “I’m so excited to actually have the opportunity to meet our fans during 2022. I hope to see as many From A and different places as possible. We will go to your city and deliver a great show. See you all soon. I love you so much From A.

All Access Asia would like to thank the members of 2Z – Jiseob, Hojin, Bumjun, Zunon and JungHyun for taking the time out of their busy schedules to chat with us. We’d also like to extend our thanks to Shean Han and GoGo2020 for making this happen.

Are you looking forward to hearing even more material from 2Z? Are you one of the lucky From A who will get to see them this year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
